Business is shifting because the world is changing. As a result, these changes are causing a transformation in the communications landscape and the CCO role is expanding. Our latest report, "Beyond Communication: CCO Leadership in Navigating New Complexity,” provides crucial insights into this evolution, elucidating why effective two-way communication and relationship-building are essential elements of achieving multistakeholder value. Below are a few key themes that we explore in more depth throughout the report.
As businesses require more multistakeholder leadership, CCOs have significantly expanded their strategic influence. Beyond traditional roles, they are now pivotal in defining (or redefining) mission and purpose, decoding societal trends, fostering innovation and guiding companies through times of crisis. Their unique multistakeholder orientation, combined with effective communication and relationship-building skills, are proving indispensable for businesses aiming to achieve long-term, sustainable success in an increasingly complex environment.
Our research uncovered that the remit of many CCOs has widened considerably, often encompassing areas such as sustainability, public affairs, brand and marketing, people and culture, societal responsibility and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I). This expansion is a testament to the evolving role of corporate communication, from a function focused on message dissemination to one deeply integrated into the strategic fabric of the organization, promoting a cohesive and inclusive corporate identity.
The integration of technology into communication strategies, or CommTech, is accelerating, offering both opportunities and challenges. Technology enables deeper insights and personalized stakeholder engagement, but CCOs must also address AI's ethical implications and reduce risk to the organization by ensuring their teams use these tools responsibly. The rapid pace of change outstrips regulatory frameworks and organizational adaptability.
This expanding scope and increasing complexity of the function present challenges related to the skills, resources and well-being of communications teams. As CCOs steer their functions through this transformative era, there is a pressing need for strategic investments in team development, technological tools, and supportive work environments that foster innovation and resilience.
Now is the time for all communications professionals to shift their mindset to a more strategic outlook. Communicators at all levels should continuously improve their ability to look at issues through a multistakeholder lens, identifying blindspots and areas for optimization. They should also be learning how to advise their managers at a strategic level, understanding the business and operational implications of their work. Copy link
